Varkala is the newest tourist destination in Kerala and is known for its beauty and its beach. Varkala is also a famous Hindu pilgrimage center Sivagiri, the final resting place of the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. Also the famous Janardhana Swami Temple is located here which is more than 2000 years old.
Varkala is famous for specially the undisturbed beauty of its beaches. The beach is unique and exceptional with its rocky cliffs and mineral water sprouts. Varkala beach is more than just on the beach leads to a religious as well as medical importance. It is also one of the peaceful beaches of Kerala. Obviously there are similar beaches in kerala but the attraction here is the smaller number of people. On the day the new moon, it is better not to go to the beach, if you're not very religious, because it is hard-pressed by followers. According to Hindu believes a bath here is taking away all the sins of soul and purify it. That is why it’s called papanasam. Beach Bazaars are common in Varkala, where you can pick up objects such as jewels, dresses etc. You can also spend a little money and in return enjoy the delicious seafood at the Sea facing restaurant in the cliff near helipad. Also the Natural Healthcare centre is located near by helipad.
Kappil Lake is another quiet and attractive spot offers you an opportunity to set out for a boat ride in the backwaters. You can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings while boating. The place is where the beach and the backwater merge together. A boat club has been recently built here. Another attraction is Anjuthengu Fort which is built in the 17th century by British Government. Varkala Tunnel is located near Sivagiri Mutt which is 924ft long tunnel built for maritime trade between Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. Its engineering excellence provides plenty of natural light and air circulation.
Railway Station & Bus station are 2 km from the beach. The police aid post & post office are near to the helipad. Money exchange center & telephone booths are at temple junction. You will get information about bus and train timings from here. Few small shops and cafeterias located at temple junction. A number of beach resorts are situated around with full facilities and reliable costs.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the nearest airport and it is around 52 KM far from Varkala. By rail it is 41 KM from Thiruvananthapuram central station to Varkala railway station. Also you will get Taxis and Buses from Thiruvananthapuram to Varkala. Once you reach Varkala town, you will get regular buses to reach temple junction and Helipad. Also you can choose Taxis, Rickshaws etc. There is 5 minutes walk from temple junction to Papanasam Beach.
